With the spate of deadly train accidents in recent years, investigators are finding that a rising number are being caused by an engineer’s unauthorized use of a personal cell phone.
Distracted driving is one of the main causes of car accidents in the U.S.—and it is becoming a leading cause of problems on the railways as well. That’s why Bolingbrook, Illinois-based wireless systems supplier Wi-Tronix just announced the launch of its Mobile Phone Detection System. Distracted driving has paved the way for spy devices for cell phones, particularly a cell phone spy software for Android.
In order to “improve the operational efficiency, service reliability and safety of locomotives”, Wi-Tronix’s is integrating the new system into existing Wi-PU™, in order to detect mobile devices within a locomotive’s cab that be transmitting or receiving communications over cellular frequencies.
“Distracted driving is an ongoing concern on our railways,” said President, Larry Jordan in a statement released by his company Wi-Tronix. “Earlier this year we announced our In-Cab Audible Alerts solution to help ensure safety on locomotives. Today we are demonstrating our continued commitment to safer train operations with the introduction of our Mobile Phone Detection System.”
According to the company, the Mobile Phone Detection System can identify whether a device is receiving an inbound call, placing an outbound call or communicating data—no matter if the train is moving speedily along the rails or stopped dead in station.
That’s a huge boast by the developer—and a huge boost for the NTSB who spend countless man-hours investigating, tracking and tracing data after an accident. This technology will literally save lives by allowing those who manage engineers to keep tabs on their employees while they are operating these mammoth public transportation vehicles.
But how does it all work?
According to Wi-Tronix, the Mobile Phone Detection System uses custom algorithms to ensure that the cellular signal is originating from inside the cab and not from its surrounding locations.
“If a cellular signal is detected in the cab, rules based on the railroad’s specific mobile phone policies are applied in order to determine if a possible safety violation has occurred. If a possible violation is detected, the Wi-PU generates a log and sends a notification to a pre-determined list of approved individual(s).”
The company states that this feature will each Wi-Tronix customer to meet their individual business needs of monitoring compliance to mobile device and cell phone policies. This is a good thing for railroads faced with trying to monitor compliance to federal regulations like Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Emergency Order 26, which restricts on-duty use of cellular telephones and other distracting electronic and electrical devices. The company also says that its Wi-Tronix Software as a Service (SaaS) lets customers remotely access data via regularly scheduled reporting updates, on-demand and subscriptions to notification alerts.
By promptly alerting appropriate personnel of potential distracted operation of a train, the Wi-Tronix Mobile Phone Detection System will save countless lives across the world by helping the railroad operators take control of their employees immediately and correct the bad behavior.
A cell phone spying software like Auto Forward can prevent unauthorized uses of a personal cell phone, and help keep people safe by putting an end to distracted driving.
