HTC One M8 Problems, Glitches, Questions, Errors and Solutions [Part 36]

APPS CRASH ON VERIZON HTC ONE M8

ProblemThe past week a few of my apps close when I open them. I own the HTC One M8 with Verizon. I have tried sitting down phone and uninstalling and reinstalling them but I got the same problem. The apps are:
  • Fansided
  • Jango
  • Memdroid
  • Bleachers Report
And chrome has closed a couple times. — Mike
Troubleshooting: Hi Mike. Sorry to hear that reinstalling these apps did not resolve the issue. We believe the best course of action you can take right now is to do a general wipe of your system to ensure that related bugs are addressed. It is highly unlikely that the root of the problem is hardware in nature so we need to focus only on software here.
  • Unmount the SD card. The first thing that you can try is to unmount whatever SD card you are using on this phone. If these apps were stored in the SD card after installation, try to reinstall them instead to the phone’s internal memory unit and see how they behave. If they had been installed directly to the internal storage device all along, continue to observe how they behave after you have removed the SD card. There are times that SD cards that are not working properly can create conflicts that may affect how apps operates. This is especially common for game apps. If removing the SD card does not anything proceed to the next.
  •  Clear the phone’s cache partition. Before going to the last software troubleshooting step, which is the factory reset, it is recommended that users try to clear their phone’s cache partition. Unlike a factory reset, this step does not involve deleting information from the phone’s internal memory.
Here’s how to clear the cache partition of HTC One M8:
  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Down button.
  • While still hold Volume Down key, press and release the Powerbutton to turn the phone back on.
  • Keep holding the Volume Down key until the three Android images appear on the lower portion of the display.
  • When you are in HBOOT screen, press Volume Down key to highlight Recovery.
  • Press Power key to select Recovery.
  • Once a red triangle shows up on the screen, press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously.
  • Once you are in the Recovery menu, release the buttons.
  • Press Volume Down to go to Wipe cache partition.
  • Press the Power key to confirm the selection.
  • Wait for a moment until the phone flashes “Cache wipe complete”.
  • Press the Power key again to select Reboot system now.
After deleting the cache partition, launch the apps again and observe. Proceed to factory reset if they still crash.
  • Factory reset. Multiple apps failure is normally indicative of a malfunctioning operating system. If your device’s Android version is running the most recent one, there’s only one thing that you can do at this juncture–to perform a factory reset on your phone. This solution works wonders as long as the phone’s root problems are on the software side. Don’t forget to backup your files before doing so. This may be a bit demanding but this is the only fix that we can think of for you right now.

GAMES WON’T OPEN IN HTC ONE M8

ProblemI can not open any of my games on my phone. I have the HTC One M8 and since the update I can open my games and it closes automatically back to the main screen. Will not open at all. Any of them. I have restarted my phone and have no idea what else to do now. Very frustrating. Plus my phone locks up a lot. It’s a brand new phone only had it 3 days. — Mary
Troubleshooting: Hi Mary. Try to make sure that all the games you are trying to access are fully updated. If you haven’t updated an app before, please open the Google Play Store app and update them there.
After the update, try to run the apps and observe. If they continue to do the same problem, please do the suggested troubleshooting steps we provided in the section above for Mike.

APPS ON HTC ONE M8 KEEPS ON CRASHING

ProblemSome to most of my apps are not working properly. Meaning when I try opening them it closes by its self or makes my phone go really slow. I tried to reset the device but nothing changed. I also uninstalled some apps and reinstalled them but it keeps doing the same thing. — Henry
ProblemHi DroidGuy. Every time I click on one of my apps, it closes immediately, I’ve deleted some of the apps and reinstalled and it’s still happening and it’s happening with several apps. I have the latest update, please help. Thank You. — Lakey
Troubleshooting: Hi Henry and Lakey. Henry and Lakey, we hope there is no hardware issue involved here as it looks you have already done everything that a user can possibly do on his or her end. The steps that we normally suggest when dealing with app performance issue involves booting the device on safe mode, doing a soft resetclearing the cacheunmounting of SD card, and performing a factory reset. In most cases doing one or all of them resolve the issue.
If the problem happens when you launch at least 2 apps, the culprit may purely be software by nature. You did not mention anything about removing the SD card in your problem description though. We were able to trace other app performance issues as being caused by malfunctioning SD card. Try to isolate the problem by using your phone without the SD card. This simple step has proven effective at times to all types of Android phones. If the apps behave normally without it, you should consider getting a new external storage. Other than this, there’s really nothing much that we can provide you in terms of resolution.
If the problem remains, please contact HTC and see if they offer you first hand support for their product.

SOLUTION FOR FREQUENT CRASHING APPS ISSUE ON HTC ONE M8 PROBLEM: DELETE WEBVIEW FROM PLAY STORE

ProblemI have an HTC One M8 that I did a factory reset on this week because it was very laggy and some apps wouldn’t open or crashed immediately. It seems that this started with the lollipop update and getting worse.  After the factory reset, the same apps won’t open or crash. Any ideas? I’ve uninstall the apps, turned off phone then installed again. No change.
Apps include Overdrive, Facebook, Fox news, you version Bible app. Facebook closes after a minute or two. The others won’t open and crash immediately. I continue to find apps that won’t work correctly as I work on it after the factory reset.
I have 5.0.1 version with Sense 6.0. Thank you! — Susan
Follow up email (solution): Hello. I fixed the issue by deleting the update to Android system WebView from the Play Store. Works great now!
Thank you! — Susan
Troubleshooting: Hi Susan. Thank you for telling us the solution to your problem. We have no idea Webview creates conflicts in HTC One M8s until now. This information should be very helpful for Android community including us and our readers. We appreciate the time and effort. Keep it up!

APPS ON HTC ONE M8 KEEPS ON CRASHING

Problem: My phone sucks after this update. I shouldn’t have to “factory restore and lose all my stuff only to have to spend hours that I don’t have re-installing the important ones etc. My TV listing app that i use everyday and at work for customers opens then closes right away. My SoundHound app that is also important to my job would not even open anymore. It would open but not recognize anything for like 5 days, now it just sits there in loading mode. My phone lags drastically, my messenger takes a while to send the message and freezes my phone until it is sent. Like I cannot even answer a phone call. I am really irritated with this considering how much I paid for this phone. I didn’t want to do the update but it MADE me. Please help me fix this without factory resetting. Thanks much. — Olivia
Troubleshooting: Hi Olivia. Major software updates like the new Android Lollipop are not designed to ruin the experience of mobile users. Believe it or not, updates are supposed to even improve customer experience although apparently that is not what’s happening on your end. There can be a variety of reasons why a phone suddenly shows problems after an update. For one, the installed apps on your phone may actually be waiting for their respective updates to minimize glitches and incompatibility issues with Lollipop. This happens frequently after a major update as not all developers are keen enough to push their own updates right away. Most of the time, even minor bugs that had been there before the update gets amplified when a new operating system runs resulting to performance issues.
On another note, there is an on-going problem that many Android users (regardless of phone brand) are experiencing right now due to the new Android WebView update. What’s happening is that this new Android System WebView, a “system component powered by Chrome that allows Android apps to display web content”, is causing conflicts within the system that leads to multiple apps crashing and not working properly. There is no official word from Google about the problem at this time but in the meantime, if you are one of those who installed the update over the weekend, we recommend that you simply uninstall it. Just go to Settings>Applications (Manager)>Android System WebView>uninstall updates.
If uninstalling the updates for WebView does not resolve your troubles, you really don’t have much choice but to do a factory reset.

ProblemHello. My name is Sam and I’ve been having some issues lately. I hope that you can help me with this. For a while now I have a couple games that the kids play that used to work but lately when I start them up it goes directly out of it. It does this with Subway Surfers and Cut the Rope and when I bring up Fruit Ninjas, it brings me to the screen where I’m about to start slicing and then closes out. It’s never done this before and if y’all could help in anyway it’d be much appreciated. Thanks for all y’all do. — Sam

WORDS WITH FRIENDS, REVERSI WON’T PLAY ON HTC ONE M8 AFTER A LOLLIPOP UPDATE

ProblemHi. Have been playing Words With Friends on my HTC One with Lollipop since the Lollipop update was available. Recently WWF has stopped loading. I sign into WWF using my Facebook account. The app starts to open and then immediately closes.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled WWF a number of times to no avail.
Since WWF was not working I decided to play 2048. And that app also closed immediately on opening. Then I tried Reversi and it also closed immediately when I opened the game play! Seems all of my games won’t run.
My other apps are running fine.  — Stuart

HTC ONE M8 VOLUME DOWN BUTTON STUCK

ProblemThe Volume Down button on my M8 is stuck down. I can move the volume up button however not the down. This is causing the phone to stay in a safe zone and cannot be turned on. I was told the phone is trying to reboot itself but with the Volume button being stuck nothing can be done about it.
Is there a way to pop the Volume Down button out? — Jazmine
Troubleshooting: Hi Jazmine. If the Volume Down key is stuck, the best thing that you can do is to let a professional handle the problem. Attempting to fix this type of hardware issue yourself can potentially wreck the phone for good.

HOW TO SET AUTOMATIC SCREEN ROTATION FOR HTC ONE M8

ProblemHi. I’m having trouble with my Gallery on my HTC One M8. When I go into the Gallery, sometimes I want to turn the phone so the picture that’s in landscape view gets bigger and fills the entire screen. But now, something changed, and when I turn the phone the image doesn’t turn, it just stays the same as if I had the phone straight up. Do you know how I can fix this? — Ginger S

  • Go to Settings.
  • Tap Display & gestures.
  • Select Auto-rotate screen.
This should now force your phone to rotate and give you what you are looking for.

HTC ONE M8 EARPHONE NOT WORKING

ProblemHey, I found your troubleshooting and tips guide for the HTC One M8 on Drippler recently, and I found it really helpful for fixing a problem I first off, thanks. Now I’m having another issue and hope you can help with that too.
I was watching YouTube the other day and my earbuds just stopped working out of the blue. Since then, the phone has not been able to detect the ear buds. Of course, I thought it must be a hardware issue, but the weird thing is that the same earbuds work perfectly on my other phone, and a different pair of earbuds work perfectly on the HTC phone. I tried wiping the cache partition but that didn’t work either. After a quick Google, I found that this is a common problem for this phone and a factory reset doesn’t help. I’m using a five month old phone, stock ROM and the earbuds that came out of the box. Any solutions? Thanks. — Imran
P.S: Sorry for long email.
Troubleshooting: Hi Imran. We appreciate your effort in giving us as many details of your problems as possible so don’t worry about your email being “long”.
As regards your issue, it sure looks interesting from our standpoint. There is no simple solution to this one. Depending on the choices you have at hand, you can either opt to just use the working earphone you currently have or ask for a phone replacement. We know this doesn’t answer your question on what may be the real cause of the problem but these are the best course of action that you can do as of the moment. Unless we can physically check the hardware and the headphone, there’s nothing much that we can do.
