Sony's unveiled its latest addition to its Xperia Z series in the shape of Xperia Z Ultra, with a huge 6.4 display and Snapdragon 800 processor with water resistance capability. The phone itself doesn’t fit in a phone category neither in a tablet category and its better to give it a phablet category like Galaxy Mega 6.3 launched by Samsung.
Display
Xperia Z Ulta packs Sony’s OptiContrast and X-Reality 6.4-inch display that runs at 1080p resolution that is without any doubt better than Note 2, Lg Optimus G pro and Galaxy Mega 6.3. It packs 344 pixels per inch which seems to me better than any 5 to 6 inches of mobile until now in the market. However, we have to wait for Note 3 in the future to give it a real competition.
Hardware:
Sony without any goof ups this time taken its device to next level by putting a Snapdragon 800 in Xperia Ultra with a 2.2 GHZ clock speed, this is a best clock speed you can have in your mobile until now. Xperia Z Ultra has powerful Adreno 330 GPU to push all the pixels to the screen for gaming and graphics. Hardware is one of the strength in this mobile as it introduces you to Snapdragon 800 in mobile device officially.
Design
Despite the fact its a hefty 6.4 inches of mobile and weighs 212 grams, the Sony Z Ultra has elegant design like Xperia Z, including the tempered glass back, but adds a metal frame along the sides. Another thing i like about Xperia Ultra is its thickness which is 6.5mm (Xperia Z is 7.9mm) and makes it even slimmer than all the new fancy looking slim phones. It's water-resistant too with a IP58 certification, same as the Xperia ZR. Unlike the IP57 of the Xperia Z, this certification allows the Xperia Z Ultra to dive deeper than 1m and stay there for longer.
Software
Xperia Z Ultra comes up with Android 4.2.2 and runs Sony UI.
Internal Memory
There's 16GB of built-in storage, 11GB of which is user-accessible, while a microSD slot will add an additional 64GB if needed.
Connectivity
The Ultra packs 4G LTE (not confirmed yet) connectivity, HD Voice along with NFC, Bluetooth, Wifi, GPS, AGPS, Wifi Tethering and packs all other connectivity options that we have on Xperia Z. There's also Sony's proprietary WALKMAN player with ClearAudio+ and xLOUD enhancements.
Battery
Xperia Z Ultra has equipped with non removable 3000 mAh battery which seems to me better than Xperia Z, but not as good as on Note 2 and Lg Optimus G pro. Battery is a weakest link in this device.
Camera
Sony Xperia Z Ultra has 8MP Exmor-RS sensor at the back which is capble of recording 1080p videos from it and supports HDR for both stills and movies, but with flash light. On the front of Xperia Z Ultra we have 2 Mega pixel camera similar to Xperia Z.
Final Verdict
To give my final verdict we are going to use a SWOT analysis below
Strength
Xperia Z Ultra packs a beautiful 6.3 inches display with a superior design and water resistant capability which obviously becomes its strong strength and this cannot be easily imitable.
Weakness
Camera seems to me one of the weakest factor involve in this device because it has downgraded from Xperia Z 13MP camera to 8MP camera without flash light. This can be arguable from some users, especially flash light at the back of Z Ultra. Another weakness i have found is its battery which is not up to the mark especially if you are talking about 6.4 inches of Full HD Display.
Opportunity
Hardware is one of the biggest opportunity Sony can avail by introducing a Snapdragon 800 processor in its new flagship. Snapdragon 800 processor gives Sony a early mover advantage to capture some of the mobile market share.
Threats
The biggest threat to Sony Xperia Z Ultra is from Samsung Galaxy Note 3, third generation of
Note from Samsung. Note 3 is expected to have same hardware specs that Xperia Z Ultra have, but without water resistant feature and off course design will be different from Sony Flagship. Size can also become one of the threat for Ultra as its huge in dimensions and its not easy to carry it.
Sony Xperia Z is expected to fall on shelves at Q3 of 2013.
